When making images I have always kept things simple. I have a location (background) and a subject (foreground). A photograph is real, an observation captured on camera. What is of importance is when an image becomes unreal, when it turns from reality into fantasy. This can only be done through some form of manipulation, in this case the accentuation of the subject. Under normal circumstances the subject is ordinary/common but through manipulation it becomes extraordinary/uncommon. Because of this, the subject reaches a new level of impartiality, it is seen outside of its normal context and becomes more independent of its original meaning. It begins to be its own entity. It develops new qualities. It has its own life. This heightens the basic characteristics of the subject. More attention can be drawn to its physical qualities, its shape, its colour, its form. It can be seen for what it is. It can be seen in a different light. |
