ART IN PUBLIC SPACES - ART WINDOWS, a very special presentation of contemporary art, will be exhibited all over Hong Kong from August to October 2001. Different than traditional art exhibitions, ART Windows will be displayed at highly-visible retail store windows. This first-of-its kind exhibition will bring today's art closer to the Hong Kong public, making it part of everyday life.
Leading retailers are sponsoring this exceptional art project by providing their store windows as venues for ART Windows. These sites on crowded streets or malls will attract a large viewing audience as shopping is a favorite pastime of Hong Kong people, who do not commonly visit traditional art spaces.
Twenty-four outstanding site-specific ART Windows will appear all over Hong Kong, Kowloon and New Territories. Each high-quality ART Window is created by one artist. An extensive range of media and artistic styles are explored, such as sculpture, installation, fiber optics, painting and video installation. Many of Hong Kong's best-known architects, graphic designers, visual artists, photographers and video artists have been invited to participate. These artists and their works represent a wide spectrum of contemporary Hong Kong culture.
The Closing Discussion will be co-presented by the Goethe-Institut Hong Kong. Professor Boris Groys, director of the Academy of Arts, Vienna, will talk about ART Windows. The public is invited to attend.
ART Windows is curated and organized by Sabrina Fung and presented by SFFA projects (a not-for-profit program). The project is part of a continuing initiative to raise contemporary art awareness in the everyday life of Hong Kong. It has been made possible by generous funding from The Annie Wong Art Foundation. Windows are sponsored by: G.O.D.; Joyce; Kitterick, Millie's; Offspin; Seibu; and The Body Shop. Equipment is sponsored by Phillips Electronics Hong Kong. AON is the insurance sponsor for all the artworks.
